Rockies' Jake McCarthy creates MLB inside-the-park home run history

Colorado Rockies leadoff hitter Jake McCarthy drilled a line drive off San Francisco Giants starter Trevor McDonald into right-center field at Oracle Park on Sunday.

Right fielder Jung Hoo Lee appeared to downshift his pursuit, assuming the ball would bounce over the wall. But it didn't and McCarthy hustled around bases after Lee misplayed the carom. The Rockies' speedster capped the effort with a hook slide home and a muscle flex after rising.

Initially, McCarthy was not credited with a piece of MLB inside-the-park history as Lee was charged with an error. The official scorer later revised the decision and changed the triple into a round-tripper.

Credited with his second first-inning inside-the-park homer this season and the third in franchise history, McCarthy's highlight proved to be the Rockies' lone run during Sunday's 3-1 defeat.

McCarthy is making a name for himself with the Rockies, becoming the major league's first batter to compile two leadoff inside-the-park homers during the same season since New York Giants center fielder Edd Roush in 1929. McCarthy also became the ninth big leaguer since 1901 to collect multiple inside-the-parkers.

An offseason trade acquisition from the Arizona Diamondbacks, McCarthy continues proving to be a building block for the last-place Rockies (39-59). With the league settling into the All-Star break, the 28-year-old could forge a long-term role with a rebuilding club if he has a strong second half.

Enjoying a career campaign, McCarthy posted career-bests in batting average (.301), homers (10), doubles (18) and slugging percentage (.516) through 83 games.

McCarthy remains no stranger to establishing league records recently. Leading the Rockies to a 15-3 victory on July 3, McCarthy became the first player to register a leadoff home run, grand slam and stolen base during the same game.
