It's August, and Cam Ward is at the center of one of the NFL's most exhausting storylines.
The 23-year-old is already turning heads at Tennessee Titans training camp with his stellar work ethic and impressive raw traits, but there's a prevailing notion that the Miami product is being disrespected by the national media.
Former Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III took to X to "defend" Ward and peddle the comically repetitive take.
"Cam Ward is the most disrespected QB #1 overall Pick EVER," Griffin wrote. "I know it's just a Madden Ranking, but Cam Ward having a 71 rating and not even being a top 10 rated rookie in the game as the 1st Pick in the NFL draft and the lack of national media coverage of him solidifies it."
Citing a video game rating as the crux of an argument, trying to suggest a coordinated smear campaign against a first-year player is a bit preposterous, even for RG3's standards.
This isn't even a new phenomenon for Madden. 2023 top selection Bryce Young was a 73 during his first year and was four notches lower than second pick C.J. Stroud.
Given the quarterback's immense influence, EA's team logically employs a more dramatic rating scale for that position.
Ward went to three different colleges and was the first name off the board in a universally proclaimed weak class—naturally, he wasn't going to garner loads of fanfare out of the gate.
But with all the hysteria about Ward's coverage, that's actually propelled him to become a consistent talking point. Can't say I've seen much buzz this July of Abdul Carter or Will Campbell.
Where's the fake outrage?
Cam Ward should focus on producing on the field and not on how much "First Take" discusses him daily.
