The Atlanta Dream were riding high this WNBA season, gaining traction as a serious contender alongside powerhouses like the Liberty, Lynx, and Mercury. Led by stars Brittney Griner, Allisha Gray, and rising scorer Rhyne Howard, the Dream had carved out a spot in the league's top tier. But this week brought a sudden jolt to Atlanta’s upward trajectory.
Dream Star Out With Knee Injury
Rhyne Howard, the Dream’s explosive guard and recent All-Star selection, suffered a left knee injury during Atlanta’s July 11 game. After a medical evaluation, the team confirmed she’ll be sidelined for the remainder of July.
According to a statement shared by WNBA insider Khristina Williams, Howard is expected to fully recover, though there’s no official timetable yet for her return.

The timing couldn't be worse. Howard was chosen to play in the WNBA All-Star Game on July 19 in Indianapolis, but now Team Collier will look for a replacement.
Howard was putting together another strong campaign in her third year in the league. She's been averaging 16.5 points, 5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game, ranking second on the team in both scoring and assists.
The 24-year-old has been a mainstay in Atlanta’s lineup since being drafted in 2022 and has quickly become one of the league’s most dynamic offensive threats.
With Howard out, the Dream will lean more heavily on Gray, Griner, and Jordin Canada to keep the playoff push alive. Howard’s absence is a blow, but if she returns healthy in August, Atlanta’s title hopes could still be very much alive.
