Considering the Boston Celtics are expected to struggle next season, it might not be the worst idea to have a fun season. If the Celtics want to tank halfway through the year or don't believe they have a chance to win it all, bottoming out and trying to put on the best show for the fans has some benefits.
When recently examining a situation that could unfold and do just that, NBA Insider Jake Weinbach noted that the Washington Wizards could buy out Marcus Smart. He later added that the Celtics could be interested in a reunion with the former Defensive Player of the Year Award winner.
“A potential reunion between Marcus Smart and the Celtics would not be off the table.
“The Wizards, who now carry 17 players on the active roster, are expected to offload key veterans to make room for younger assets and would reportedly prefer to send Smart to a desired location,” he wrote.
From Smart's perspective, it wouldn't be the worst idea to go back to Boston on a cheap deal while he's still getting paid by Washington.
However, his future beyond that would be somewhat questionable.

He's still young enough to want to likely be with a team he can trust for the foreseeable future, and after the Celtics traded him the first time, it's tough to say they wouldn't do the same thing if they had an opportunity to get better.
This is a business at the end of the day, from the Celtics' perspective, but it's also one from Smart's.
It'd be fun, and fans would love it, but there would have to be some other things that need to be figured out.
