Retired NYPD chief drowns in his Long Island home’s pool

A retired NYPD chief was found dead in the backyard pool of his Long Island home, according to police.

Anthony Izzo’s body was found by a relative inside the pool on Friday around 7:45 p.m., the Suffolk County Police Department said in a statement.

First responders rushed to the Stony Brook residence and performed CPR on the 75-year-old.

He was then taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators do not suspect any foul play.

Izzo, who was the son of a New York City police officer, kicked off his career in law enforcement when he was 17 years old in 1968 as a police trainee, according to a QNS profile piece from 2011.

He worked his way through the ranks and was promoted to chief of the Organized Crime Bureau in 2006.

“Chief Izzo dedicated decades of his life to protecting New Yorkers and supporting the men and women of the NYPD,” the Detective Endowment Association wrote in a heartfelt tribute.

Izzo also served as the commanding officer of the 115th precinct in Jackson Heights, Queens, in 1995.

“His leadership and dedication to the people of New York City left a lasting legacy. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones. May he rest in peace,” the precinct wrote.

The NYPD Columbia Association, a fraternal organization representing Italian heritage in the department, described Izzo as a proud police chief and Italian-American.

“Chief Izzo was more than a distinguished member of the NYPD. He was a Lifetime Member of the Columbia Association, a former Man of the Year honoree, and a longtime supporter and friend of our Association,” the non-profit wrote.

“We are grateful for his years of service, his friendship, and his continued support of our Association.”
