The Boston Red Sox are not having a great season, as they sit 3.5 games out of first place in the American League East and have the fourth-worst record in Major League Baseball (10-17). In their last 10 games, the Red Sox had a 4-6 record and had a four-game losing streak before manhandling the Baltimore Orioles (17-1) on Saturday.
Despite ending their four-game losing streak, the Red Sox have decided to make a drastic change to the team, which includes firing the entire coaching staff.
The Boston Red Sox cleaned house by firing Alex Cora and the rest of the coaching staff
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Red Sox have fired manager Alex Cora, hitting coach Peter Fatse, bench coach Rámon Vazquez, and game-planning coach Jason Varitek. Cora, 50, has served as the Red Sox manager since 2018, tallying a 619-541 record and leading them to win the 2018 World Series over the Los Angeles Dodgers (4-1).
Passan adds that the Red Sox have also let go of third base coach Kyle Hudson. Cora had two years remaining on his current contract with the Red Sox.
Third-base coach Kyle Hudson was also let go by Boston, sources tell ESPN.
Less than a month into the season, the Red Sox are almost fully overhauling their coaching staff. Alex Cora is out with nearly two years remaining on his deal. Wholesale changes have come to Boston.
Even though the Red Sox have gotten off to a slow start, Cora has not been a bad manager, coming off his best season (89-73) in 2025 since 2021 (92-70). However, Cora did have a few seasons when the Red Sox struggled, going 237-249 from 2022 to 2024. The Red Sox as a team are hitting .233 (18th in baseball), while the pitching staff has been worse, 21st in ERA (4.44).

It is not known who will replace Cora as manager, but the most immediate option would be Chad Tracy, manager of their Triple-A affiliate in Worcester. Now a free agent, Cora could quickly find another manager job soon, as the Philadelphia Phillies could potentially be letting go of manager Rob Thomson. Thomson’s job is on the line with the Phillies having the worst record in Major League Baseball (8-18) and riding a 10-game losing streak.
Cora has a close relationship with the Phillies' president of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski, who hired Cora as the Red Sox manager in 2018. Time will tell where Cora lands, but for the Red Sox, a massive change is happening.
