The Los Angeles Lakers have shown interest in trading for a young sharpshooter on a Western Conference team.
Per Sam Amico of Hoops Wire, the Lakers have monitored the availability of Sacramento Kings guard Keon Ellis. Ellis has averaged 6.4 points, 2.1 rebounds and shot 41.8% from 3-point range in his four NBA seasons.
“As the Lakers scan the market for defensive help, one name that keeps popping up is Kings guard Keon Ellis,” Amico wrote.
Ellis hasn’t seen consistent minutes with the Kings, as he’s only played more than 25 minutes five times this season. He’s averaged 5.5 points and is shooting 39.5% from the field in 25 games.
Ellis could bring a shooting boost to a Lakers team that’s struggled from deep at times this season. LA is shooting 42.1% from three, which ranks 18th in the league.
Ellis has also been known as a stout perimeter defender who can take on tough assignments. He could provide minutes for a contending team that’s willing to give him a bigger role.
He’s on a modest $2.5 million contract but could be a free agent this offseason if he doesn’t sign an extension.
“There’s also the contract angle. Ellis can hit unrestricted free agency in July if he doesn’t sign an extension by February 9, meaning any acquiring team risks a short stay. Still, the Lakers are kicking the tires.”
Los Angeles has several expiring contracts. Gabe Vincent ($11.5M), Maxi Kleber ($11M) and Jaxson Hayes ($3.4M) could potentially be used to match salaries deals.
