Reliving the best game in the career of retired Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams

4 hours ago 1

The career of Mike Williams has come to an end, and it has done so with little more than a whimper. Williams signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers this offseason, returning to the team that made him a first-round pick in 2017.

But he didn't even make it to training camp.

Last week, in a bit of a surprising move, Williams chose to retire from the league, rather than press on for another season. It was certainly frustrating news for Chargers fans, as it left the team in a bit of a hole at the wide receiver position and continued the downward trend that Williams had been on.

But his career should not be remembered in a negative light.

Williams finishes his career among the best receivers to ever play for the team. This is where he stands on the team's all-time list in these categories:

Receptions: 309- 13th
Receiving Yards: 4,806- 10th
Receiving TDs: 31- 13th

Rather than remembering Williams for how his career ended, let's take a look back at one of the top highlights in team history over the past decade, at least.

December 13, 2018: Chargers 29, Chiefs 28

This will always be the "Mike Williams Game". It was Thursday Night Football at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chargers and Chiefs were battling at the top of the AFC West, but the Chiefs, early on in the Patrick Mahomes era, were ready to establish themselves as Super Bowl favorites on this night.

Williams had other plans.

Williams had six two-touchdown catch games in his career, including this one. But he added a third touchdown on a 19-yard running play, helping the Chargers spring the upset.

After Williams caught a touchdown pass with just four seconds left on the game clock, the Chargers decided to go for the two-point conversion and the win. Philip Rivers found a wide-open Williams on the play, putting the Chargers up by one point and putting a cap on what was, by far, the best game Williams ever played.

His statline, aside from the touchdowns, would not reflect that. He had seven receptions for 76 yards and a 19-yard rush. But the three touchdowns, two-point conversion catch, and his big plays in crucial situations were the reason the Chargers won this game.

The Chargers are just 2-10 against Kansas City since.

Williams may have left something to be desired during his tenure as a former first-round pick, but it will never get old for Chargers fans to go back and watch the highlights of this win. You can make the case that the team hasn't won a game bigger than this one since.
