Reds lefthanded hurler continues quest for 2025 Cy Young award

First things first, due to missing some games, Andrew Abbott has yet to qualify for the earned run lead in the National League. But, he is not far off. He has thrown 75.1 innings after his performance on Sunday.

A performance that the Cincinnati Reds needed in a bad way. A performance that helped his team avoid a three-game sweep to a divisional foe.

The Cincinnati Reds, with their 4-1 win over the Cardinals on Sunday, moved to 40-38 on the season. Just three more games to reach the halfway point in the 2025 season.

To qualify for the ERA crown, you need to throw 162 innings, which Abbott has to make sure he stays healthy for in the final months of the season, and he can certainly reach that mark. His outing on Sunday got him to 75.1 on the season.

The outing was a seven-inning, three-hit, one-run performance, where he struck out just three batters. That put his June numbers at 27.2 innings, just 21 hits, and a total of six earned runs. Abbott struck out 19 and walked just two so far this month.

His season ERA is down to 1.79 on the season, which would rank ahead of Paul Skenes for the best in baseball if he were eligible. Skenes has tossed 102 innings, while second-place Hunter Brown is at 91 innings.

Abbott is 7-1 on the season. His seven wins rank just one behind Robbie Ray of the Giants and Brandon Pfaadt of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League.

The Reds have won five out of their last six starts dating back to May 18.

While winning the Cy Young may be a little far fetched as the end of June arrives, his current path seems to be on the right pace. It will be interesting and fun to watch the lefthander maneuver through the rest of summer and if the Reds can stay alive in the National League playoff picture.
