The Cincinnati Reds apparently made a huge effort to extend Elly De La Cruz for a decade.
Their superstar shortstop turned them down.
That's what The Athletic's C. Trent Rosecrans reported in a new story on Friday.
"Last spring, the Reds made an offer to shortstop Elly De La Cruz that would have eclipsed Joey Votto’s club-record 10-year, $225 million contract extension that he signed in 2012. De La Cruz turned it down," wrote Rosecrans.
This came after comments from Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall.
“We made Elly an offer that would’ve made him the highest-paid Red ever,” Krall said, via Rosecrans. “That’s not where he is and you respect that. It’s their career. You keep going and you keep working on what you can do today.”

De La Cruz told Rosecrans: "I let my agent take care of all of that."
His agent is Scott Boras, known for taking his clients all the way to free agency to secure the biggest payday.
De La Cruz won't be a free agent until after the 2029 season.
The Reds have had success with early extensions like this, namely for ace starting pitcher Hunter Greene.
But at least for now, it's not something De La Cruz appears to be considering taking.
De La Cruz just turned 24 earlier this month.
He has played 420 MLB games and has 60 home runs and 139 stolen bases with a .773 OPS.
His future is clearly bright, and he's betting on himself on the contract front.
