The Cincinnati Reds are currently last in the NL Central, and don't look likely to be making a postseason run this season. But that doesn't mean this year is a total failure.
Elly De La Cruz has looked great, Sal Stewart was an All-Star and looks to be a cornerstone of the franchise for a while, and Chase Burns has been a bona fide Cy Young contender. And now, the Reds have made a huge contract decision on top of all of that.
According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Reds are in agreement on a $105 million contract extension over the next seven years with Burns. The superstar right-hander is sticking in Cincinnati, and this is some great news for the Reds fan base.
$105M Chase Burns decision is good news for Reds fans
"Right-hander Chase burns and the Cincinnati Reds are in agreement on a seven-year, $105 million contract, sources tell ESPN," Passan reports. "Burns, 23, was an All-Star this season and one of the best young pitchers in baseball. No club options. A straight deal that will run through 2033."
The Reds are spending a lot of money on Burns, handing him a huge $105 million contract. For a team that typically isn't spending a lot, this is a great sign.
Next in line for an extension should be De La Cruz and Stewart, but there has been some worry about getting a deal done.

But, if the Reds are willing to spend a ton on Burns, a 23-year-old pitcher who's an All-Star and one of the best young players at his position, they should be willing to do the same for their other young stars.
This massive deal for Burns ties the large contract they gave to Homer Bailey, which was the franchise record for a pitcher. It's clear the Reds believe in burns considering how much they've just spent on him.
But what this also means is some great news for Reds fans. Having the franchise willing to lock up its key players well into the future is a great sign.
While the jury is still out with Stewart and De La Cruz, this $105 million contract extension for Burns is a good starting point to keep this young core of stars together in Cincinnati for the long haul.
