Red Wings' Dylan Larkin trade plans changed after offer sheet news

1 hour ago 2

Nothing in the NHL happens in a vacuum.

Dylan Larkin remains a member of the Detroit Red Wings, and his trade request hasn't yet resulted in a deal.

But over the weekend, the Philadelphia Flyers gave an offer sheet worth $18 million per year to Ducks phenom Leo Carlsson.

As the price for a star center went up, so did Larkin's.

Not his contract, of course. That's already set in stone.

But now that Carlsson has re-set the center market, the fact that Larkin makes nowhere near that amount is a significant factor in trade negotiations.

Larkin is under contract for $8.7 million per year through 2030-31.

According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman on his latest 32 Thoughts podcast, that's going to lead to Detroit to ask for even more in return in a Larkin trade.

This take is certainly aligned with what has been said about Steve Yzerman and the Detroit front office all along -- they weren't just going to settle for a mediocre Larkin offer.

They realize that their captain, at his price, with a recent gold medal, is a highly valuable commodity. The Red Wings don't plan on selling low.

That could make it tough to actually move Larkin. If the price is sky high, a deal might not be immediately forthcoming.

But it's certainly relevant to see how a different transactional situation can impact what happens with Larkin. Supply and demand and cost of acquisition all works together.

For Larkin, his trade cost has gone up just as Carlsson has raised the center market.
