Red Sox weren't really close in pursuit of top right-handed free agent bat

The Boston Red Sox have addressed most of their needs this offseason, but they've still yet to sign an impact right-handed bat in free agency.

On Friday, one of the top options, Teoscar Hernandez, inked a three-year, $66 million deal with a fourth-year option at $15 million to return to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Over the last year, Hernandez, 32, made it pretty clear that he wanted to play for the Red Sox and call Fenway Park his home, but Boston wasn't just outbid for his services again, they apparently weren't even close.

According to MassLive's Chris Cotillo, the Red Sox never really pushed to sign Hernandez this offseason.

Boston's top options now are third basemen Alex Bregman (in free agency) and Nolan Arenado (in a trade), outfielder Anthony Santander and first baseman Pete Alonso.

However, the further we get into the offseason, the more it seems like the Red Sox are willing to go into the 2025 season with top prospects Kristian Campbell and Roman Anthony playing early in the season.
