Red Sox trade proposal brings $34 million first baseman to Boston

The Boston Red Sox could be looking for a new first baseman at the trade deadline. Triston Casas will miss the rest of the season, and there is a hole at first base in the Red Sox lineup.

First base has been a revolving door since Casas got hurt. Abraham Toro and Romy González have seen most of the work there, but the Red Sox worked out Kristian Campbell there as well. The team is still in the postseason race, and could benefit from a steady option at first base.

Sports Illustrated's Patrick McAvoy proposed this trade that would bring Rhys Hoskins from the Milwaukee Brewers to the Red Sox:

  • Red Sox receive: Rhys Hoskins
  • Brewers receive: Justin Gonzales (Red Sox's No. 14 prospect) and Hayden Mullins (Red Sox's No. 30 prospect)

The Brewers are still in the postseason hunt, but trading Hoskins is the type of move the Brewers would make, considering how they have operated in the past. Hoskins signed a two-year, $34 million deal last season and has a $18 million mutual option for next season. That may be a price the Brewers do not want to pay as they continue to lower their payroll.

The Brewers also just traded for Andrew Vaughn, who is quietly starting to find his swing in Triple-A. Jake Bauers can also play first base if the Brewers decide to move Hoskins. The Brewers would be losing a big bat, but may be content with their other options to get something from Hoskins before they potentially let him walk.

Hoskins hit just .214 last year, in his first season after tearing his ACL. His batting average is back to around where it has been in the rest of his career, and he has 11 home runs so far. Hoskins also has a .757 OPS and would be a steady option for Alex Cora down the stretch.
