Red Sox trade idea cuts ties with Wilyer Abreu for NL Central ace

The Boston Red Sox are in desperate need of pitching help behind Garrett Crochet. If they are in the postseason hunt, they could target controllable arms at the trade deadline.

The Red Sox are 1 1/2 games out of a wild card spot entering play on Tuesday. Their starting rotation has one of the worst ERAs in baseball at 4.36. Garrett Crochet's ERA is 2.20 through 16 starts, so it is clear the Red Sox need some help. ESPN's Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel tabbed Milwaukee Brewers ace Freddy Peralta as a trade candidate and the Red Sox as potential suitors.

The Brewers are in postseason position and getting Peralta off their hands will not be easy. He is playing on an extremely affordable deal that has an $8 million club option for next season. AthlonSports' Sterling Bennett suggested this trade to get Peralta to Boston:

  • Brewers receive: Wilyer Abreu and David Sandlin (Red Sox's No. 9 prospect)
  • Red Sox receive: Freddy Peralta

"Milwaukee would receive two controllable pieces through at least 2029, and Boston snags the best arm on the market to pair with Crochet for the next two seasons," wrote Bennett.

The Brewers organization values defense, and Abreu would be a great fit. The team has a surplus of starting pitchers, with some elite arms in the minor leagues already, but still, it would take a lot to get Peralta. The Brewers have Jackson Chourio and Sal Frelick in their outfield, and both have been great players this year. However, their final outfield spot could use an upgrade with Garrett Mitchell stuck in injury limbo and Christian Yelich serving as the designated hitter now.
