The Boston Red Sox have signed a catcher amid the World Series.

The 30-year-old is a five-year veteran who has spent time with the Toronto Blue Jays (2021) and the Washington Nationals (2021-25).

According to Ari Alexander of 7News, the AL East organization has agreed to a minor league contract with Riley Adams.

Adams is a former third-round draft pick of the Blue Jays in 2017. He will likely join the Red Sox as a non-roster invitee at next year's spring training.

In 263 career Major League games, Adams is a .211/.287/.354 hitter with 21 home runs and a .640 OPS.

"Defensively, Adams has repeatedly graded out as a poor framer but has turned in decent marks in terms of blocking balls in the dirt and throwing.

"He’s played a little first base in his career but has spent the overwhelming amount of his time at catcher and designated hitter," Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors wrote about Adams' defense behind the plate.

Boston's undisputed starting catcher heading into 2027 is Adley Rutschman. Connor Wong and Mickey Gasper are the top backup options.

If Adams remains with the organization beyond spring training, he's likely to start the year at Triple-A Worcester.
