The Boston Red Sox have done well this offseason after a horrendous start, but they still have neglected one spot in their roster: their bullpen. With Justin Wilson gone, they only have two lefty relievers in their bullpen in Aroldis Chapman and Jovani Moran.
Fansided’s Christopher Kline predicts the Red Sox will fix this by signing veteran lefty reliever Danny Coulombe. He’s a lefty that can take a middle relief spot, and is good enough to handle the lefty beasts in the AL East.
“Kopech is the most exciting reliever available, but Danny Coulombe might be the most reliable reliever still looking to sign. Coulombe has been a reliable left-handed reliever for the majority of his 11-year big league career, and while he did struggle down the stretch of the 2025 season, his 2.30 season ERA shows how well he pitched overall. The Boston Red Sox sure could use him. Aroldis Chapman is their closer, but the next-best left-handed reliever on the Red Sox is probably Jovani Moran, who made just two MLB appearances in 2025 and hasn't pitched particularly well in the majors since 2022. Coulombe can be used in a middle relief role as a weapon against big left-handed boppers like Gunnar Henderson, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Addison Barger and get the job done more often than not. He would not cost much at this point of the offseason and would be a very necessary upgrade to a bullpen in need of more depth,” Kline wrote.
This past season, Coulombe posted a 2.30 ERA, 43 Ks, a WHIP of 1.163, and two saves in 55 games. He would definitely be better than Moran, and could be a great middle reliever for the Sox.
He’d also be cheap. He’s only projected to receive a one-year, $4.3 million deal, and for a Sox team that doesn’t really like to spend on free agents, that would be ideal.
Hopefully Boston grabs him soon, or another contender will drop right in and take him from under their noses.
