Red Sox predicted to reunite with $1.5 million 3.35 ERA veteran reliever to provide lefty depth in Aroldis Chapman-led bullpen

The Boston Red Sox arguably had the best bullpen in the American League last year, highlighted by Aroldis Chapman and Garrett Whitlock. However, after this offseason, they've lost a lot of depth for everything before the eighth and ninth inning.

One way they could resolve this is re-signing one of their veterans that did leave in free agency. Fansided’s Zachary Rotman proposes that the Sox should reunite with veteran lefty Justin Wilson, as he was a core piece of their bullpen in 2025.

“The Boston Red Sox had arguably the best bullpen in the American League in 2025. Aroldis Chapman obviously played a huge role in that, but fellow southpaw Justin Wilson was an underrated piece for Alex Cora all year…The Red Sox could use more bullpen depth, particularly from the left side. Yes, Chapman is still in town, but he's going to pitch the ninth inning almost exclusively. Who is going to get the elite left-handed hitters out in big spots earlier in games? As of now, Boston's best left-handed reliever not named Chapman is probably Jovani Moran, a 28-year-old who has made two big-league appearances since 2023. Just as you can never have enough starting pitching depth, you really cannot have enough bullpen depth. Re-signing Wilson is an easy decision for Boston to make,” Rotman wrote.

This past season, Wilson posted a 4-1 record, a 3.35 ERA, 57 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.407 in 61 games. While he’s not the flashiest, he gets the job done, and done well.

He’s also only projected to receive a one-year, $1.46 million deal, so it’s not like the Sox would break the bank to re-sign him. The only problem they really have is the fact he’s considering retiring

If the Sox can get over that hump, they should very well bring him back. If they want a contending team, they need all the pieces they can get.
