Red Sox predicted to dump Jarren Duran thanks to Alex Bregman update

The Boston Red Sox have some important decisions to make in the coming weeks, centered around Alex Bregman's future. His latest contract update could mean some players will have to be let go.

Alex Bregman and his agent, Scott Boras, have made it known they are willing to have extension talks. According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, Bregman's next deal could reach $200 million.

"The belief here is that with Bregman's great start a deal would likely have to be around $184M (what he offered to sign with the Tigers), or perhaps even $200M," Heyman wrote.

The Red Sox have the financial flexibility to pay Bregman after trading the rest of Rafael Devers' contract to the San Francisco Giants. However, Bregman and his representation know that the Red Sox may be desperate to keep him, and they can afford to pay him close to $200 million.

Even if the Red Sox do, they will have to make some difficult moves. FanSided's Zachary Rotman predicted Jarren Duran would be one of the players the team has to move on from to afford Bregman. Duran is not overly expensive, but every dollar counts if the team wants to pay Bregman and address their starting rotation.

"Duran isn't expensive right now, but he has a club option worth $8 million in 2026 and then two arbitration years," wrote Rotman. "He's only going to get more expensive, and his price will obviously reach an all-time high following the 2028 campaign when he hits free agency. The Red Sox have a good enough outfield to justify trading him, and dealing him would allow them to address another need or two with a cheaper option to fit Bregman in. Red Sox fans won't like it, but it makes sense."

To be fair, Duran could be traded regardless of Bregman's contract. Saving money by trading him will help, but he may be the odd man out in the outfield already. He has an All-Star nod under his belt, and trading him could yield a return that fills other needs.
