Red Sox predicted to bolster rotation, trade for $6.5 million All-Star to become No. 2 pitcher behind Garrett Crochet

The Boston Red Sox have made a couple of moves to upgrade their roster this offseason, but nothing spectacular. And with their division rivals all making serious upgrades, it’s time for them to make one too.

According to Just Baseball’s Ethan Hyatt, their first serious upgrade will be trading for Washington Nationals All-Star ace, MacKenzie Gore.

“The stars seem to be aligning for the Red Sox to make another big move and pursue one of the top trade candidates in baseball in MacKenzie Gore of the Washington Nationals…Boston only won one playoff game in 2025, and they don’t seem happy settling for this at all. Especially when given the improvements made by the Blue Jays and Orioles this offseason, the Red Sox probably have something else up their sleeves before the 2026 season is upon us. MacKenzie Gore could be a perfect addition to their pitching staff, and they definitely have the prospect pool to land him,” Hyatt wrote.

This past season, Gore posted a 4.17 ERA with 185 Ks and a WHIP of 1.353 over 159 innings pitched. Gore was great in the first half, however, with an ERA of 3.08 and 138 strikeouts.

And, if the Sox were to acquire him, he’d have the offseason and spring training to work with pitching coach Andrew Bailey, who helped multiple starters for the Sox take the next step or rebound in 2025.

Hopefully, the Sox start negotiating soon; otherwise, they may miss out on Gore and all the other stars left on the market. If that happens, they could lose all the trust they had left from their fans.
