Red Sox positioned to trade for Tarik Skubal, Hunter Greene or Freddy Peralta, writes MLB insider

The Boston Red Sox made it to the playoffs in 2025 but couldn't make a deep run.

To go further next season, the pitching rotation might need an upgrade.

The Athletic's Jim Bowden has shared good news in a new article this week: The Red Sox have enough talent to go out and get just about anyone.

"The Red Sox are focused on adding starting pitching, and they have plenty of prospects in their strong farm system to perhaps trade for top arms like Tarik Skubal, Hunter Greene or Freddy Peralta," Bowden writes. "They also have the financial freedom to land one of the top starters in free agency, though trading for a top-tier starter is their preferred route."

Skubal is the Detroit Tigers' ace, a southpaw and the best pitcher in the American League. He'd form an absolutely dominant duo at the front of Boston's rotation with Garrett Crochet but would also cost a ton.

Greene, the Cincinnati Reds' No. 1, would also be hugely pricey. He's under club control through 2029, but that would also make him a major acquisition if Boston could pull off a deal like that.

Peralta is the Brewers' front-end starter but entering the final year of his contract. His timeline aligns with when Milwaukee traded away Corbin Burnes, so it seems likely that Peralta is the most available of the bunch.

Boston surely wouldn't put Roman Anthony into any trades. But would they consider Marcelo Mayer or Kristian Campbell? If one of those young infielders was dangled, the Red Sox could start trade talks with pretty much anyone for pretty much anyone. Considering that Boston's farm system is deep and talented beyond those top-end guys, the Red Sox would have a very solid chance of getting a big-time trade over the line if they want.
