Kristian Campbell looked like the Boston Red Sox were going to plug him in at second base and he'd stay there for a decade.
He was the first of the big three prospects to arrive. Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer started the 2025 season at Triple-A Worcester.
Not Campbell. He was with the big club from the start.
But then things didn't go as planned, not at all.

Campbell batted .223 through 229 at bats and was a negative-1.0 in Wins Above Replacement.
The Red Sox had him spend much of the season back down at Triple-A while his prospect buddies came up to the majors, with Anthony looking especially good and Mayer seeming likely to stay up going forward.
Campbell, though, is trickier. Even though Boston could probably use an Opening Day second baseman, it doesn't seem likely to be him.
The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey reports that Campbell isn't even assured an Opening Day roster spot.
McCaffrey's report indicates that Campbell could "force his way onto Boston's bench with a monster spring at the plate."

More likely, he's heading back to Triple-A.
On the one hand, that makes sense. Campbell needs the every-day action, and he's more likely to get that at Triple-A.
Boston will just have to hope he hits his stride and that the next time the 23-year old reaches the majors, he hits the ground running and sticks around for good.
