The Boston Red Sox are going all out to find an ace or two for their starting rotation. One ace they were looking at was free agent and former Cy Young Corbin Burnes, but MLB insider Jon Morosi doesn’t see them as a favorite to land him.
“I think there are two teams that stand above the others, those are the Baltimore Orioles and the Los Angeles Dodgers. But, I was told by a source that nothing was getting finalized yet, he is still having broad interest across the Major Leagues.”
Burnes was a top option going into the offseason for the Sox, but it may be good that they aren’t favorites to land him anymore.
Burnes has shown some decline this past season, as his K/9 dropped by to 8.4 which is around the league average, compared to his Cy Young year in 2021, where he had a 12.6 K/9. His BB/9 has also gone up from that year, going from 1.8 to 2.2.
If Burnes does land with the Sox, it’s not a bad thing either. He’s still a top pitcher in the league, and maybe some work with pitching coach Andrew Bailey will get him back to his Cy Young numbers.
.@jonmorosi says the leaders for Corbin Burnes are the Orioles and Dodgers.
Says it’s not a two team race and nothing’s imminent, but they’re the leaders and he doesn’t necessarily need to wait for Soto to sign to make a decision.
