The Boston Red Sox’s month of May was definitely a messy one, as they finished 13-14. They were a measly 4-11 at home, but they were a dominant 9-3 on the road.
Their offense seems to have woken up as well, but it still has one Achilles Heel that they still haven’t figured out how to fix: converting runners in scoring position into actual runs scored.

Boston’s bats have finally started to wake up, and the stats reflect that. In the month of May, the Red Sox had the second-best AVG, sixth-best OBP, ninth-best SLG, eighth-best OPS, and 11th-best wRC+ in the MLB.
Bats that have been ice cold have woken up as well, with the prime example being Jarren Duran, who was explosive in May. Caleb Durbin has also been heating up, something Boston has desperately needed.
The Red Sox still aren’t winning consistently

Even with this overall uptick in offense, the Red Sox were still 13-14 in May. It seems when it comes to scoring the runners they create, they just can’t do it.
In fact, in the month of May, they were 22nd in home runs, 23rd in runs scored, and 24th in OPS with runners in scoring position (RISP).
Without consistent run scoring, the Red Sox will not get out of the funk they are in. And if they don’t get out, they will fade back to mediocrity, and last year will be the outlier.
What the Sox need to do

At this point, trading for another slugger needs to be at the top of Boston’s to-do list. They now have multiple good hitters in Wilyer Abreu, Willson Contreras, Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela, and hopefully Durbin, but they still don’t have a superstar slugger to rally around.
Theoretically, it was supposed to be Roman Anthony, as Boston hoped he would take a leap this year and be an MVP candidate. However, with his current injury, it looks like he will miss a good portion of the season.
Hopefully, the Red Sox review all of this, see that glaring weakness, and solve it by the trade deadline in August.
