The Boston Red Sox suffered a devastating blow late last week when first baseman Triston Casas was carted off the field after a knee injury. Casas has since had surgery and will miss the rest of the 2025 season.
This leaves Boston with a bit of a hole at first base, one that will need to be filled if they want to make a run at the New York Yankees in the American League East.
Before signing Alex Bregman, they were in talks with the St. Louis Cardinals about a possible trade for Nolan Arenado.
J.T. Buchheit of Redbird Rants noted that with Casas out, Boston could circle back to Arenado to fill their need.
"Arenado has bounced back a bit from 2024, which was the worst year of his career in nearly every category, and he should hold some value to a team willing to take on some of his contract. The Cardinals were adamant on making whoever traded for Arenado eat a significant portion of his remaining salary, and with the Red Sox' desperation as a team currently in a winning window, the Cardinals may finally be in a position of leverage in such a deal," Buchheit wrote.

Arenado had the Red Sox on his list of teams he was willing to accept a trade to last offseason. He also was reportedly willing to accept a move to first base to facilitate a trade.
Alex Bregman is playing third base for Boston and Rafael Devers is serving as the designated hitter. But with Casas out, there is a hole at first base, and perhaps Arenado could fill that hole.
It may take a while for a deal to materialize, but the Red Sox need to replace Casas' production, and Arenado's swing could play well at Fenway Park, a right-hander hitter-friendly ballpark.
The Cardinals, while having played much better baseball of late, are still far from a clear contender, while Boston has their sights set on the postseason. This could help them move closer to catching the Yankees.
It will be interesting to see what Boston decides to do.
