The Boston Red Sox made another decision regarding Trevor Story as he continues to struggle in the 2025 Major League Baseball season.
Story is the Red Sox’s starting shortstop, but he has struggled at the plate. Due to his struggles, Boston manager Alex Cora demoted him in the lineup.
Story was dropped to seventh in the lineup on May 20, which was the lowest he’s been this season. The shortstop ended up going 1-for-3. Story has struggled throughout the season, and Cora says the metrics are there for him to turn it around.
“All the metrics, all the information that we have — the bat speed is there, his hands are where they’re supposed to be. Everything looks okay,” Cora said. “The only thing we’re not doing right now is hitting the ball forward…
“Just missing his pitches,” Cora added. “That’s the bottom line. I know he’s swinging a lot, but he’s getting pitches in the zone and he’s fouling them off. And after that, they (pitchers) get to work.”

Story is in the fourth year of his six-year, $140 million deal, but there is an opt-out after this season. The shortstop is hitting .232 with 6 home runs and 21 RBIs, but in his last seven games, he’s hitting .160 with 0 home runs and 2 RBIs while striking out eight times in 25 at-bats.
Although Story is struggling, Cora still has confidence that the shortstop will be able to turn it around. But, for now, he’s been dropped in the lineup until he starts hitting the ball and getting on base.
Story is a two-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger Award winner, both happening in 2018 and 2019 when he was with the Colorado Rockies.
