The Boston Red Sox had a big need for bullpen help this offseason, and while they've added a few pieces, they've yet to add a lock-down closer to really separate their relief options from the rest of the pack.
Left-handed reliever Tanner Scott was the top free agent remaining on the market, and Boston had been poking around, but Scott agreed to a four-year, $72 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday, according to MLB insider Mark Feinsand.
The 30-year-old earned All-Star honors in 2024 while playing for the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres. He posted a 1.75 ERA, 1.125 WHIP and 10.5 K/9 in 72 innings across 72 appearances.
Had Boston signed Scott, he would've been their closer, but without him, the job seems to be up for grabs between Liam Hendriks, Aroldis Chapman, Justin Slaten and Luis Guerrero.
There are still talented relievers in free agency that the Red Sox should still be in on such as Kirby Yates and Carlos Estevez. They shouldn't feel great about going into the season with their bullpen the way that it is.
