Red Sox listed as potential landing spot for All-Star corner infielder

The Boston Red Sox are falling out of playoff contention but there is still plenty of baseball left to be played.

At 41-44, the Red Sox are eight games behind the New York Yankees for first place in the American League East but are only three games back from the third AL Wild Card spot.

Since shocking the baseball world by trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants on Father’s Day, the Red Sox have gone 4-8.

Despite this recent spell of losing, Boston is still in the postseason mix and have a lot more money to bring in impact players.

R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports ranked the top 25 trade candidates and their potential landing spots. The Red Sox were listed as a landing spot for a former All-Star.

Colorado Rockies corner infielder Ryan McMahon was rated the top trade chip by Anderson and Boston could be a good fit for the 30-year-old.

McMahon had a rough start to the season but picked it up in May. The 2024 All-Star has 12 home runs and 25 RBI while slashing .220/.322/.394 in 82 games.

“At first blush, part of his appeal is his consistency: he's on pace to extend his streak to five consecutive seasons with an OPS+ between 93 and 98,” wrote Anderson. “That, plus his quality defense at third base, would be enough to make him a good addition to most teams.

“He's both swinging and hitting the ball harder than before, and he's doing it at a different angle, allowing him to pull the ball in the air more readily.”

Pulling the ball in the air as a lefty is a recipe for success at Fenway. Considering the Rockies are on pace to be the worst team of all time, trading McMahon with two years of control could be the best time to get as much as possible in return.

Nobody knows what the Red Sox will do at the trade deadline, but the team has enough talent to compete and should be looking to add quality players.
