Red Sox linked to trading for $3.5 million pitcher to soldify rotation

The Boston Red Sox are now holding onto a playoff spot and should look to add to their roster ahead of the July 31 Major League Baseball trade deadline.

Ahead of the deadline, the Red Sox have been linked to adding pitching to solidify the rotation. Red Sox analyst Mike Rosenstein of NESN links Boston to trading for Miami Marlins starter Cal Quantrill.

“The Red Sox are shopping for starting pitching after losing Hunter Dobbins to a season-ending torn ACL," Rosenstein wrote. “If Boston isn’t willing to bet on Alcantara rebounding and don’t want to give up top prospects for Cabrera, there’s always door No. 3 in Miami.

“Quantrill, 30, is 3-8 with a 5.62 ERA in 18 starts this season. The right-hander has trending downward since his breakout season in 2022,” Rosenstein added. “That year, he won a career-high 15 games while posting a 3.38 ERA for the Cleveland Guardians. However, Quantrill is making just $3.5 million this year and will be a free agent after the World Series, making him an affordable short-term rental.”

As Rosenstein notes, Quantrill isn’t making much money and wouldn’t likely cost all that much for the Red Sox. The right-hander would be a good No. 3 or No. 4 starter for Boston and help raise the floor of the rotation for the playoff push.

Quantrill also has experience pitching in the playoffs as he’s 0-2 with a 5.23 ERA in 3 games, including 2 starts, as he could start a playoff game or go into the bullpen for the Red Sox.

Boston is 53-45 and holding onto the second Wild Card spot.
