Red Sox linked to ex-Astros first baseman as Triston Casas replacement

The Boston Red Sox are in a little bit of trouble at the moment after losing Triston Casas for the season. Casas tore his patellar tendon last week and had season-ending surgery.

Boston now finds themselves in need of a solution at first base. They could look at internal options or look outside the organization for help.

They'll need to do something to get them by until the trade deadline, whether that's calling up a prospect or adding somebody from the outside.

Justin Leger of NBC Sports Boston listed several external candidates, one of which was former Houston Astros first baseman Jon Singleton.

"Among the most sensible trade options are Dominic Smith (New York Yankees), Jon Singleton (New York Mets), and Justin Turner (Chicago Cubs)," Leger writes.

"Singleton has a .923 OPS in Triple-A but has no path to playing time in Queens with Pete Alonso at first base."

Singleton doesn't have good career numbers. He's a career .198/.301/.347 hitter with just 29 home runs, 104 RBI and a .649 OPS.

He provided a little bit of a jolt with Houston last year, hitting 13 home runs and knocking in 42 runs, but he still hit just .234/.321/.386 with a .707 OPS.

Still, he could be a short-term solution for the Red Sox as they wait until the trade deadline to add a more prominent piece. The team is 18-19 and sits in second place in the American League East.

To catch the New York Yankees, they may need to go big for a bat at the deadline.

We'll see what Boston decides to do.
