Red Sox left Alex Bregman confused with Rafael Devers trade: 'Above my pay grade'

The Boston Red Sox made a shocking move when they traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. The move not only left fans shocked, but also the players on the team.

The Red Sox were back above .500 when they traded Devers. Since making the trade, they have struggled. The team is also currently without its other star hitter, Alex Bregman. Bregman spoke on the Devers trade and what Devers was like as a teammate.

"I really enjoyed every second of playing with him and being his teammate," Devers said in an interview posted by NESN. "He’s one of the smarter baseball players I’ve ever played with… I was shocked but it’s well above my pay grade."

Devers' relationship with the team was a talking point ever since spring training. When the team signed Bregman, who was a two-time All-Star third baseman and a much better defender than Devers, Devers refused to give up playing third base. He eventually agreed to be the designated hitter. However, when Triston Casas sustained a season-ending injury, Craig Breslow reportedly asked Devers to switch positions again and play first base.

Devers did not take kindly to Breslow's request and went on a rant in the media. He even called out Breslow, saying he does not understand his decisions and told him to hit the market to find a first baseman.

Now Devers is a Giant, and Bregman is still injured. The Red Sox are in danger of falling out of contention. Bregman was slashing .299/.385/.553 with 11 home runs before his injury. If he returns with the team in contention, he will be a huge factor in making the postseason. With Devers gone, the Red Sox have some financial flexibility to keep Bregman around long term.
