Red Sox interested in .292 BA Marlins infielder not named Otto Lopez

The Boston Red Sox are in pursuit of infield help this summer, as the struggles from their current options have necessitated a move.

But, after Curtis Mead sustained a broken bone in his first game with the team following a big trade, the Red Sox now need even more infield help. They've been on the hunt for shortstops, but they are now showing interest in second baseman as well.

According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, Katie Woo, and Will Sammon, the Red Sox are reportedly interested in a Miami Marlins infielder, but not Otto Lopez. Instead, it's .292 batting average, second baseman Xavier Edwards.

"While Miami Marlins shortstop Otto Lopez is of interest, another Marlins infielder, Xavier Edwards, also has the Sox's attention," Rosenthal, Woo, and Sammon report.

The Red Sox's interest in infield help shouldn't be a surprise, but it's still noteworthy whenever a new name pops up as a potential trade option.

After being linked to Lopez in recent days, the Red Sox are now linked to Edwards, the other contact-first infielder on the Marlins, who is likely available for trade.

The 26-year-old infielder is under club control through the 2029 season, and this season in 110 games and 401 at-bats, he has 2.8 bWAR with 117 hits, 51 runs scored, 14 doubles, six triples, six home runs, 18 stolen bases, 55 walks to 63 strikeouts, and a .775 OPS.

His 120 OPS+ would be a nice addition for the Boston lineup, and he'd likely take over at second base, with Caleb Durbin sticking at third base full-time.

While the Red Sox likely want to upgrade shortstop, Edwards' defense likely means he's a second baseman only. But, even though he might not be the kind of dream pickup like Lopez might be, Edwards would still be a fantastic target for Boston this summer.
