Recently, the Boston Red Sox solidified their starting lineup with the acquisition of star ace Walker Buehler. Now, Red Sox insider Rob Bradford predicts the Sox will start going for a righty slugger; either Alex Bregman or Teoscar Hernandez.
“Even with the acquisitions of Crochet and Buehler, the Red Sox' offseason to-do list isn't complete. They are still in need of a right-handed bat, with Teoscar Hernandez remaining on their radar. Alex Bregman also continues to be a target, with Detroit seemingly representing the club most aggressively trying to sign the infielder”.
Either player could be a big win for the Red Sox, but they both come with pros and cons.
For Bregman, the Sox can get a guy who’s won a Gold Glove, a Silver Slugger, and two World Series. He could play second, and fill in at third when needed.
His con is, he would be a huge financial burden for a while. He wants a 7 year, $200+ million dollar deal, and is already 30 years old. It might not make sense for the Sox to make that kind of investment for a declining player.
As for Hernandez, he wants a shorter deal near three years, $70 million. He’s a stronger hitter than Bregman, but a worse defender. However, between left field and DH, he could do fine. His major con is he is 32 years old, so he could be due for a major decline at any moment.
Hopefully, the Sox analyze everything about both players before making their choice, so it doesn’t come back to bite them.
