The Boston Red Sox signed Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million deal in the offseason. His deal has an opt-out, and an extension has become a hot topic in the last few weeks.
Bregman missed a significant number of games with a quad injury. However, he has already proven he can be a key player for the team. He is slashing .298/.380/.546 with 11 home runs and was named an All-Star. He and his agent, Scott Boras, have made it known they are open to an extension.
The Red Sox have not started extension talks with Bregman, according to WEEI's Rob Bradford. However, after trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, the team has much more money to play with, and his agent knows that. According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, Bregman's next deal could reach $200 million.
"The belief here is that with Bregman's great start a deal would likely have to be around $184M (what he offered to sign with the Tigers), or perhaps even $200M," Heyman wrote.
Bregman has an opt-out after the season, putting pressure on the Red Sox to get an extension done so that they do not get outbid on the open market. Bregman is a three-time All-Star and now the team's best option at third base moving forward.

Trading Devers has put the Red Sox in a tough negotiating position. Bregman's representative knows the team has no reliable plan at third base now if Bregman opts out. Marcelo Mayer could play there, but his bat is nowhere near as good as Bregman's. That, on top of the season Bregman has put together, raises his price tag for the Red Sox.
