Red Sox free agent pitch replace Rafael Devers with $123 million Mets superstar

The Boston Red Sox traded away their best hitter, Rafael Devers, to the San Francisco Giants. They will try to win without him for the rest of this season, but will have the money to replace him in the offseason.

The Red Sox managed to get rid of the entirety of what was left on Devers' $313 million deal. They will save over $250 million over the next eight-plus years, allowing them to spend big in free agency now. They have a need at first base and could make a play for the best available free agents.

Pete Alonso signed a two-year, $54 million deal with the New York Mets last offseason. However, his deal has an opt-out that he will likely exercise after what is shaping up to be a phenomenal year. Spotrac projects him to earn a four-year, $123 million deal on the open market. FanSided's Drew Koch suggested the Red Sox go after him as a free agent.

"Seeing as how Alonso is hitting .293/.390/.570 with a 174 OPS+ this season, he's bound to opt out of his current deal," wrote Koch. "Alonso bet on himself after receiving little interest on the open market this past winter and should be on the Red Sox's radar."

No player has hit more home rns than Alonso in the National League since his debut in 2019. Only Aaron Judge has hit more home runs in all of baseball. Alonso is one of the best sluggers in the game, but this year his average is showing why the Mets should have locked him up when they had the chance.

Alonso has driven up his price tag, and the Mets may not be able to afford him anymore. The Red, suddenly with money to spend, could pay Alonso and still be able to justify paying Alex Bregman, who will also likely opt out.
