The Boston Red Sox pitching staff could use some help, and the team may try to find some in free agency. They could target an All-Star who is slated to hit the open market.
The Red Sox traded for Garrett Crochet and gave him a $170 million extension. He has been great, posting a 2.20 ERA. However, as a whole, the rotation has a 4.31 ERA, which is the eighth-worst in baseball. The Red Sox need to try and find Crochet a reliable running mate in free agency.
Framber Valdez of the Houston Astros is slated to be a free agent, and FanSided's Drew Koch suggested the Red Sox make a run at him. The Athletic's Chandler Rome revealed in the offseason that the team did not approach him with extension talks and recently revealed they are not likely to re-sign him.
Valdez is a two-time All-Star and would be the perfect addition to the Red Sox rotation. He has a 3.28 career ERA and has made 150 career starts. He has been durable and has not missed many starts since the start of 2022. He has received Cy Young Award votes in four of the last six seasons as well. His price tag could be high, but that may not be a problem for the Red Sox.
The Red Sox will reportedly save $250 million after trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. They will have to use some of that money to keep Alex Bregman around, but they should be able to afford an elite starter like Valdez this winter.

Spotrac projects him to earn a three-year, $70 million deal. This season, he has made 15 starts with a 3.09 ERA. He has also thrown two complete games. He and Crochet could become an elite duo at the top of the Red Sox rotation. The Red Sox signed an Astros superstar last winter, and it has seemingly worked out. Could they go after another next offseason?
