The Boston Red Sox are struggling. They sit in second place in the American League East, but are also a game under the .500 mark at 18-19.
They are going to need to address a recent hole at first base. Triston Casas tore his patellar tendon last week and was carted off the field at Fenway Park.
He is now out for the rest of the 2025 season, and the Red Sox are going to need to find a temporary solution.
Justin Leger of NBC Sports Boston listed a few options from outside the organization. Among them was former Red Sox Dominic Smith.
"Among the most sensible trade options are Dominic Smith (New York Yankees), Jon Singleton (New York Mets), and Justin Turner (Chicago Cubs)," Leger writes.

"Smith was a fan favorite during his 84-game stint with Boston last year, posting a .706 OPS."
Smith had flashes of greatness last year, hitting six home runs in addition to his .706 OPS and also driving in 34 runs. His slash line of .237/.317/.309 left a little be desired, but he does provide pop from the left side of the plate.
As Leger notes, he has been in the minor leagues with the Yankees, but he could be a potential solution with Casas on the shelf.
Boston might still need to make a bigger upgrade at the trade deadline, but Smith could temporarily get them by until then.
The 29-year-old has spent most of his career with the New York Mets, but made a stop with the Washington Nationals in 2023, briefly played in Boston last year and even played nine games with the Cincinnati Reds.
We'll see what the Red Sox are thinking about the current situation. It's clear that first base is a need.
