Red Sox could cut ties with Gold Glover in blockbuster trade

The Boston Red Sox outfield is crowded, and the situation could get even more complicated soon. The logjam could open the door for a trade to acquire a valuable player.

The Boston Red Sox outfield has primarily featured Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu and Ceddanne Rafaela. However, Roman Anthony is showing out in Triple-A, and his debut is just around the corner. Not to mention, Rob Refsnyder is still on the team, and Masataka Yoshida will have to play in the outfield now that Rafael Devers is the everyday designated hitter.

Finding at-bats for six outfielders will not be easy. ESPN suggested that the Red Sox could use Abreu as a trade chip to add an upgrade while also fixing their outfield logjam.

"Boston has a good problem developing in Triple-A, where star prospects Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer are thriving. Mayer has four doubles and seven homers in his first 24 games, and Anthony is dominating the strike zone, with 21 walks and 22 strikeouts on top of his 1.004 OPS," wrote ESPN's Buster Olney. "The front office has clear alternatives in the event of injuries or lack of performance at the big league level, as well as valued trade options -- maybe not these two prospects, but marketable big leaguers, like Wilyer Abreu -- for the July trade deadline."

If Anothy struggles in the big leagues, the Red Sox can simply go back to playing the trio of Abreu, Duran and Rafaela. However, if Anthony is as good as the Red Sox hope, they will have to play him every day. Abreu has good trade value. He is just 25 years old and will not be a free agent until 2030.

He has also won a Gold Glove in his young career. He has a .929 OPS and six home runs this season. Despite his great play, it makes more sense to trade him than Rafaela or Duran. Duran was an All-Star and the All-Star Game MVP. He has an $8 million club option next year as well. Rafaela has already signed an eight-year, $50 million extension.
