Red Sox could acquire $28M Triston Casas replacement in trade with Orioles

The Boston Red Sox will be without Triston Casas for the rest of the season after he ruptured his left patellar tendon and underwent surgery. They could fill their hole at first base through a trade with the Baltimore Orioles.

The Orioles are 13-22 and shaping up to be sellers near the trade deadline. The Boston Red Sox could be interested in Ryan O'Hearn to replace Casas. Newsweek's Andrew Wright tabbed the Red Sox, among other teams, as a contender to acquire O'Hearn.

"His average is first one the team and his seven home runs tie him with (Cedric) Mullins for the team lead," wrote Wright. "If he is made available, there are several teams who could use another left-handed bat in their lineup. The Red Sox, Giants, Reds and Rangers should all be interested in acquiring him."

O'Hearn is playing on an $8 million club option this season. He will be a free agent after the season and Spotrac projects him to earn a two-year, $28 million deal. He is off to the best start of his career and could be a huge asset for the Red Sox.

The Red Sox are looking like they could threaten the Yankees in the American League East, but they cannot afford to have a hole at first base. Casas was underperforming to start the season and O'Hearn would be a clear upgrade. Additionally, his being a free agent after the season would work out great for the Red Sox if they still believe in Casas.

The Orioles don't look like they're going to become contenders overnight, so trading their star players is certainly on the table. A rental like O'Hearn would not cost the Red Sox too much either. He's hit 36 home runs since joining the Orioles.
