Red Sox All-Star Jarren Duran may have sealed his fate with latest outburst against Athletics

The Boston Red Sox were able to win their seventh series in a row yesterday with a 5-4 win over the Athletics, but some actions during the game might have sealed one of their All-Star’s fate with the franchise. 

In the past, outfielder Jarren Duran was an offensive staple for the Red Sox, leading them in doubles and triples, and overall being one of the fastest players in the game. However, this season has been the total opposite, and combine that with his actions during the season, and his time in Boston might be coming to an end.

This season, Duran has been the worst hitter on the Red Sox, and arguably in baseball. He’s slashing .195/.252/.337/.589 with 10 doubles, 13 home runs, 54 RBI, and 15 stolen bases in 101 games. The only reason he’s had a starting job in left field is due to the fact Roman Anthony has been sidelined with injury since April.

The craziest part is just two years ago, Duran was one of the best players in the sport. He finished the 2024 season as the All-Star MVP, slashing .285/.342/.492/.834 with an MLB-leading 48 doubles and 14 triples, 21 home runs, 75 RBI, and 34 stolen bases in 160 games.

It seems like his poor performance and interactions with fans have affected Duran’s mental status as well, as he’s had multiple outbursts this season. He’s had altercations with fans which have soured relations, and just yesterday, he was yelling at Willson Contreras for not tagging up and scoring on a shallow pop fly by him.

Combine that with his stats, and his future is pretty spelled out at this point.

With Roman Anthony finally working his way back, Duran might be on the block in the next few days up to the trade deadline. Boston has an extra left fielder in Masataka Yoshida, and also the AAA depth they always tend to use. 

Even if they don’t trade him at the deadline, Boston could try to move him this offseason since Anthony will be healthy for the potential 2027 season. Duran’s tenure in Boston was electric for a time, but it seems that electricity has finally fizzled out.
