Red Sox acquiring Willson Contreras from Cardinals after missing out on Pete Alonso

After failing to land Pete Alonso, the Red Sox have pivoted to another option for first base.

Boston acquired Willson Contreras from the Cardinals, The Post’s Jon Heyman confirmed — with pitchers Hunter Dobbins, Yhoiker Fajardo and Blake Aita going back to St. Louis in the deal, according to ESPN.

Contreras, who spent the first seven years of his career with the Cubs and the last three with the Cardinals, reportedly waived his no-trade clause, according to MassLive.

He caught for most of his career and earned three All-Star honors at the position, but in 2025, he shifted to first base and appeared in 120 games — with 119 starts — there for St. Louis, while also hitting .257 with a .791 OPS, 20 homers and 80 RBIs.

And after watching Alonso bolt from the Mets to the Orioles on a five-year, $155 million deal, the Red Sox — who offered the slugger fewer years and “significantly less” money because of his age, according to the Boston Globe — needed to fill that spot in their lineup.

In addition to a division rival bolstering their lineup in an offseason where Brian Cashman has remained quiet so far, the trade will also impact the Yankees’ rivalry with the Red Sox because of the jolt Dobbins provided last year.

He told the Boston Herald that “if the Yankees were the last time to give me a contract, I’d retire” while concocting a narrative that his father had been drafted by the organization twice and was friends with longtime Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte.

But The Post’s Joel Sherman revealed that Dobbins’ father never had any association with the Yankees and that he wasn’t close with Pettitte.

“The whole backstory, it was stuff that I had heard growing up and seen pictures of, from my dad,” Dobbins said after the story broke. “… At the end of the day, I don’t go fact-check my dad or anything like that.”
