Red Sox 5-player trade haul could land Paul Skenes in Boston, MLB executive says

The Pittsburgh Pirates have been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons.

They sit in last place of the National League Central with a 17-33 record ahead of a home series with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Pittsburgh has not reached the postseason since 2015 when the Chicago Cubs defeated them in the NL Wild Card game.

Many may think that the idea of moving their franchise cornerstone, second-year sensation Paul Skenes, is unfathomable. But it’s always a possibility if the Pirates get an offer that’s too good to pass up.

According to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand, one Major League Baseball executive thinks the Boston Red Sox could be a team that can assemble this kind of trade package to land the star right-hander.

“The reality is that few teams have that many good players to trade. I guess the Red Sox could send (Triston) Casas, (Roman) Anthony, (Marcelo) Mayer, (Kristian) Campbell and (Tanner) Houck, assuming they won’t trade their extended guys," the executive said, per Feinsand. "Writing that down makes me think, ‘Hmmm, maybe Pittsburgh should make a call.’”

The Red Sox would be giving up a lot in a deal like this, but a team would have to offer a blockbuster package for Pittsburgh to even answer the phone.

If the Pirates make this move, they bring in multiple MLB players and Boston’s No. 1 and No. 2 prospects. Would this be enough to contend right away? Probably not, but it accounts for several holes on the team and would get them closer to ending the rebuild.

More executives asked by Feinsand said they believe a team would have to give more than what the San Diego Padres gave up for Juan Soto, considering Skenes is only in his second season in the big leagues.

A move like this would give Boston an incredible one-two punch in Skenes and Garrett Crochet, who they traded for during the offseason and signed to a six-year, $170 million extension.
