Recently DFA'd Phillies infielder claimed by Mets amid Orioles series

The New York Mets were eliminated from postseason contention on Monday. 

It's been a disappointing season in Queens for everyone involved. 

Still, the front office is making roster moves with the regular season winding down. This time, the Mets have added an infielder with no Major League experience. 

According to an announcement from the Philadelphia Phillies, third baseman Christian Cairo was claimed off waivers by the Mets. 

Cairo signed a minor league deal with the Phillies after spending parts of six seasons in the Cleveland Guardians system. He has yet to play in the Majors. 

In 128 games at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, Cairo hit .227.328/.298 with four home runs and 35 RBIs. His .676 OPS is subpar, but he managed to provide quality speed, stealing 25 bases in 36 attempts.

Perhaps Cairo's impressive eye is what piqued the Mets' interest. He has walked (17.4%) more than he's struck out (14.7%) in 516 plate appearances. 

If Cairo lasts the offseason on New York's 40-man roster, he will likely have to battle for a roster spot during next year's spring training. 

Cairo was Cleveland's fourth-round pick in 2019, first reaching Triple-A in 2024.
