Real Madrid to sabotage Arsenal transfer bid?

5 hours ago 1

Arsenal are all set to step up a summer transfer exodus. They are planning a big overhaul this window. Mikel Arteta is desperate to improve his roster and challenge for the Premier League crown next season.

While they are more keen on other positions, they have identified Espanyol's star custodian, Joan Garcia, as David Raya's deputy.

They approached the La Liga outfit last summer, but their bid was rejected. But Arsenal have retained their interest in the Spaniard, who has been fantastic this season.

The Gunners were reportedly ahead of the chasing pack for the 24-year-old. However, according to reports in Spain, Real Madrid have entered the race for the talented goalkeeper.

As per reports on El Periodico, Los Blancos have approached Garcia's representatives as they see the 24-year-old as a long-term successor of Thibaut Courtois, who turned 33 on May. For now, they see him as a backup goalkeeper.

As per reports, Madrid have told Garcia's representatives to not rush into any decision as they are keen on signing him.

The Espanyol custodian has a lucrative €25m (£21m) release clause, which will soar up to €30m (£25.2m) if he receives a call-up from the Spain national team.

Given his performances for the last couple of seasons, it looks extremely likely that he will get his maiden national team call-up sooner rather than later.

So there's a possibility of Arsenal losing out on the Spanish goalkeeper, who is also a prime target for teams like Aston Villa, Manchester United and Newcastle

Villa may be desperately on the lookout for a new goalkeeper this summer. They need someone to replace their trusted custodian, Emi Martinez, who may leave the club at the end of the season.

He was emotional last weekend in Villa's 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Villa Park, sparking rumours of his departure.
