Florentino Perez flirted with bringing Jose Mourinho back at several points after his tumultuous departure from the Santiago Bernabeu in 2013.
A shambolic season in 2025/26, when Madrid parted company with Xabi Alonso halfway through the campaign before they finished trophyless under Alvaro Arbeloa, persuaded Perez to fire his silver bullet.

Real Madrid preseason schedule, results 2026
Madrid got their preseason schedule underway with a couple of behind-closed-doors games at their Valdebebas training base against Alcorcon and Leganes.
There are then four games away from home in succession against Serie A side Fiorentina, Hungarian giants Ferencvaros, Deportivo La Coruna, and Schalke.
Deportivo and Schalke won promotion back to La Liga and the Bundesliga respectively last season.

Where are Real Madrid playing preseason games?
Madrid take on Fiorentina at Worthersee Stadion in Klagenfurt, Austria. They played AC Milan at the 30,000-capacity venue in 2021.
Next up will be a trip to the Hungarian capital of Budapest to face Ferencvaros on home turf.
Deportivo and Schalke will also host Madrid at their home stadiums.
When do World Cup players return to Real Madrid?
Antonio Rudiger and Endrick rejoined the Madrid squad following the game against Leganes. Vinicius Junior is due back on Friday, July 31, and it remains to be seen whether he will feature against Fiorentina.
Players such as Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Spanish World Cup winner Marc Cucurella are likely to return for either the Deportivo or Schalke friendlies.

When is Real Madrid's first La Liga game of 2026/27?
Madrid kick off their La Liga title bid with a trip to Espanyol on Saturday, August 22. Los Blancos won both fixtures between the clubs 2-0 last season.
Mourinho will then return to competitive action at the Santiago Bernabeu with back-to-back matches against Real Sociedad and Malaga, who won promotion via the playoffs last season.
