Real Madrid offer mixed injury update amid Kylian Mbappe's France withdrawal

Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso will assess several star players as the return from international duty continues in the coming days.

Los Blancos headed into the latest FIFA window on top of La Liga, with a two-point lead over Barcelona, after eight league games played.

Kylian Mbappe has been at the heart of their strong start to the season, with nine league goals and a whopping 14 scored overall, after starting all 10 matches in domestic and UEFA Champions League action so far in 2025/26.

However, he joined up with Didier Deschamps' France squad with a slight ankle issue, picked up in the 3-1 win over Villarreal just before the break.

Both Mbappe and Deschamps were keen to play down the severity of the issue ahead of a 2026 World Cup qualifier with Azerbaijan, as the duo confirmed he would be fit to start in Paris.

On the back of scoring twice for his national team in September's wins over Ukraine and Iceland, Mbappe opened the scoring in a 3-1 victory over Azerbaijan at the Parc des Princes, before being forced off on 83 minutes.

Deschamps confirmed a 'knock on the same ankle' at full-time, with Mbappe released by France as a precaution, ahead of their trip to Iceland on October 13.

Real Madrid confirm Mbappe injury update

Real Madrid fans held their breath after Deschamps' update, but reports from The Athletic claim the club's medical staff have assessed their No.9, and he will be OK to face Getafe on their La Liga return on October 19.

Mbappe only missed two games through injury in the whole of his debut 2024/25 season in Madrid before a three-match absence at this summer's Club World Cup due to a stomach issue.

Franco Mastantuono was also released by Argentina, after suffering a muscle tweak in training, ahead of their 1-0 friendly win over Venezuela.

Reports from Marca claim his situation is more of a concern than Mbappe's, but two lengthy flights could also add to Alonso's caution over him featuring against Getafe.
