Rays pitcher Hunter Bigge struck in head by foul ball during game vs. Orioles

Rays pitcher Hunter Bigge had to be carted off the field against the Orioles after he was hit in the head by a foul ball during a game Thursday night.

The second-year player was hanging on the rail of the dugout when a foul ball hit him in the head before he could move out of the way. Bigge was evaluated by medical staff and had to be helped off the field to the hospital.

Hunter Bigge injury update

The incident came during the top of the seventh inning when Oriole catcher Adley Rutschman hit a 105-mph foul ball into the Rays dugout. Bigge, who was leaning on the dugout fence, immediately went down after he was struck in the head by the ball.

The game was delayed for several minutes as the Rays medical staff attended to Bigge in the dugout. Bigge had to be put onto a stretcher and taken off the field into an ambulance, but he remained conscious and gave the fans a thumb up while he was being helped off the field.

Bigge is currently in his second year in the majors, making his major league debut last year with the Cubs before joining the Rays this season. He has 32 career games in MLB, including 13 for Tampa Bay this year.
