The Tampa Bay Rays have beaten the Cleveland Guardians in the ALCS, and will now face the Milwaukee Brewers in the World Series. In Game 6 of the ALCS, Tampa Bay got out to a lead and held on to win 7-3.
Junior Caminero and Yandy Diaz hit late-game homers to keep the Rays out in front of the Guardians, and in the process, help the team to extend a very impressive streak.
As USA Today's Bob Nightengale highlighted, the Rays have now extended a streak to 92 games in a row in which they've won a game when leading after eight innings. MLB hasn't seen such a streak last this long since 2002.
Rays make MLB history with ridiculous 92-game streak
"The Tampa Bay Rays are now 92-0 when leading after 8 innings, the longest streak since the 2002 Oakland A's," Nightengale shared.
It's been 24 years since MLB has seen a streak like this set. Those Athletics were one of the more interesting teams in MLB history, and this record the Rays just set has joined that A's team with some incredible history.
Winning these games after having a late lead is huge, especially come the postseason. If the Rays have a lead after eight innings, all indicators are that they'll win.
It's a simple premise, as opposing teams only have one inning to make up the run differential to either win or send it to extra innings for a chance of winning it all.

But for 92 games in a row, every time the Rays have played in a game in which they've held a lead after eight innings, they've gone on to win the ballgame.
In the World Series against the Brewers, Milwaukee will have to avoid being down after eight innings, because the Rays are the best team in MLB when leading after eight, and not just in 2026, but since the 2002 Athletics.
Bryan Baker and the Rays' bullpen have been incredibly clutch for Tampa Bay, and add in an offense that can tack on some insurance runs, and the Rays are always well positioned to win a game in which they have a lead after eight innings.
They've not lost a game in such circumstances for 92 straight games, and heading into the World Series, this is the exact kind of statistic that could be the difference between the Rays' first World Series title or another lost World Series.
