The Tampa Bay Rays acquired Freddy Peralta from the New York Mets at the MLB trade deadline after the right-hander posted a 4.99 ERA in 22 starts with the Mets. He was meant to be a reclamation project, with not much hope for a turnaround.
But not only has Peralta rebounded from a bad start with the Mets this year, but he just won ALCS MVP for the Rays, who are now headed to the World Series. In the process of winning the ALCS, Peralta has made some incredible MLB history.
As OptaSTATS shared, Peralta has joined Bob Gibson and Walter Johnson, two of the best pitchers of all time, in a wild MLB history that shows just how incredible he's been for Tampa Bay lately.
Freddy Peralta joins two MLB legends with wild history
"Freddy Peralta over his last 10 appearances dating back to the regular season: 50.0+ total IP, 1 run or fewer allowed in all 10, team won all 10," OptaSTATS shared. "The last 2 MLB pitchers to do that over a stretch of 10 appearances (reg/post) were Bob Gibson (19680 and Walter Johnson (1913)."
Over Peralta's last 10 outings, he's been about as dominant as the Rays could've hoped for. Anytime a pitcher can join Gibson and Johnson in MLB history, it's typically with a ridiculous feat.
In this case, Peralta's last 10 outings have been nothing short of incredible, and just what the Rays could've hoped for.
This stretch began against the Detroit Tigers with a 6.0-inning shutout. He allowed one run in six innings of work against the Mets and Atlanta Braves before closing out his regular season with three straight shutouts in wins.

Then, in October, Peralta has allowed no more than one run in all four of his appearances, ranging from a six-inning shutout of the Cleveland Guardians to a 0.2-inning relief appearance in a 7-3 win for the Rays against the Guardians.
In this 10-game stretch, Peralta has gone 50.2 innings of work while allowing five total earned runs. This is quite the accomplishment, especially considering his horrible struggles with the Mets in the first half of the year.
Now, he's a headlining ace for the Rays as they make a push for their first World Series title. It's quite the turnaround for Peralta, and this feat of MLB history, joining Walter Johnson and Bob Gibson, highlights just how impressive he's been lately.
