The Chargers took their time to lock star left tackle Rashawn Slater down. On Sunday, they made it worth his while.
The Bolts and Slater agreed to terms on a four-year extension, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported. The deal will see Slater become the game's highest-paid offensive lineman, netting $114 million across the four seasons — good for an average annual value of $28.5 million.
Slater, a former first-round pick in 2021, saw other notable LT names net big-money deals over the past year, but after establishing himself as one of the league's most feared blockers, he, too, will add some zeroes to his bank account.

Rashawn Slater contract details
- Years: 4
- Value: $114 million
Slater's new deal sees him make more money than any other offensive lineman in the land. A two-time Pro Bowler, Slater's reputation precedes him. He's one of the game's finest run blockers, and given Jim Harbaugh's reliance on the run game, Slater should feel right at home in the Bolts' offensive line for the foreseeable future.
Slater endured an inconsistent 2023, failing to field a contract extension while others from his draft class landed lucrative extensions — namely Penei Sewell (four years, $112 million) and Christian Darrisaw (four years, $104 million).
Los Angeles chose to stand pat. Slater rewarded it with another starring campaign, playing in 97 percent of the Chargers' snaps. He didn't commit a false start penalty and only tallied two holding calls in 2024.
He earned some serious coin for his efforts. Roughly $92 million of his latest deal is guaranteed, and he'll pull in $28.5 million average annual value (AAV). Both of those figures are NFL records for offensive linemen.
Slater hasn't practiced with the team in more than a week, felled by what Harbaugh called a minor injury. He's expected to make a full recovery and return to the fold in due time. When he does, he'll be tasked with shepherding the Chargers' rearguard.
Highest-paid offensive linemen in NFL
Slater takes his place at the top of the charts in terms of AAV, supplanting Tristan Wirfs. Just trailing the 2020 and 2021 draftees are Sewell, Trent Williams, and Darrisaw, among others.
